40 Scrambles

This guide is primarily meant to introduce a climber experienced in one region to the opportunities available in others. Comprehensive guidebooks for particular regions contain many moderate routes, and many more are described in various places online. However, the sheer volume of undifferentiated information becomes overwhelming: a climber visiting a new area knows all the options, but not where to start. For example, someone familiar with the Colorado Rockies visiting the Sierra Nevada may be overwhelmed by the Sierra Peak Section’s list of 248 peaks, or see only a small part of the range while climbing the 15 fourteeners. This book describes, as an entry point, a few of the best scrambles in six regions across the western United States and Canada.
